Looking for pool parts?
Hey there! Welcome to Poolside Repair, Inyo’s exciting new web series. In this series, we meet real pool owners to help them solve their pool replacement problems.
In our first installment, we assist Lou in replacing his Pentair Amerilite with an LED Pureline PureColors light. The key steps for installing a pool light are as follows:
- Cut the power cable at the fixture end.
- Attach the old light cable to the new cable and pull it through the conduits.
- Connect the new light to the power source.
As you know, pool-related tasks are never as simple as they seem. But don’t worry, we have a video demonstration to guide you through the process. And at the end of the article, we provide step-by-step instructions for easy reference.

Step 1 – Choose the Right Replacement Light
So, you’ve made the decision to replace your regular white pool light with a color-changing LED. The next step is to find out which LED fits your light niche and cord length.
Most incandescent pool lights are of a standard size, approximately 10.12 inches in diameter. For them, LED fixtures like the Pentair Intellibrite, Hayward Colorlogic, and Pureline PureColors are direct replacements. If you don’t have the original light to measure or just want to double-check, feel free to give us a call.
You’ll also need to measure the length of electrical cables for installation. To ensure you don’t come up short while installing the new light, take the following measurements:
- Distance from the pool light type to the power source
- Length from the pool light to the power source
- Add five to eight feet to pull the light to the deck for maintenance purposes
In our installation, we replace a Pentair Amerilite with a perfectly fitting Pureline PureColors light.
Step 2 – Turn Off the Power, Cut the Cable to the Old Fixture
Secure your lighting circuit by switching off the light’s switch before removing the old light. Once done, you can take the light out of the niche and cut the power cable just behind the light fixture.
Step 3 – Prepare the Niche and Conduit for New Cable Installation
To pull the cable through the conduit, we need to remove the watertight seal that attaches it to the niche. Common methods of sealing the niche include epoxy and rubber cord stoppers.
For this installation, the original cable was attached with epoxy. Remove the epoxy using a needle nose plier and a flathead screwdriver. Ideally, your light will have a rubber cord stopper, as it is much easier to remove and can be reused. For our installation, we used a cord stopper when installing the new LED light.
Step 4 – Connect the New and Old Cables, Tape or Tie Them Together
By taping the new cable to the old one before pulling it out, we complete two steps at once. We remove the old cable and install the new light cable simultaneously. Remember to use sturdy duct tape to securely bind and attach the two cables.
Step 5 – Pull the Old Cable Through
Get a good grip and start pulling the old cable through the conduit. We encountered a stubborn cable, so we used a silicone spray for smooth sliding. In our installation, the cables were detached, so we used a fish tape to pull the new cable. Make sure you have five to eight feet of cable on the fixture side before cutting it, so you can pull the light to the deck for maintenance later on.

Step 8 – Enjoy Your New Light
